About Buffalo Gap

The Town

Buffalo Gap South Dakota is a Class III Municipality located 12 miles north of Hot Springs and 50 miles south of Rapid City. The town has a population of about 107 people most of which are ranchers, service workers, and retirees. The town is part of what is known as the Banana Belt therefore the seasons are mostly mild. The town is close to all the Black Hills have to offer; springs, lakes, parks, and hiking.

Town Services

The town provides leadership through an Executive Board. Services provided are water, mowing, and trash. Connect with town officials via the Facebook link at the bottom of the page.

Town History

Buffalo Gap was the first real town in eastern Custer County. Founded in 1877, The town was located in and served as a natural passageway from the eastern plains into the interior Black Hills. The town prospered as a local transportation hub and supply station for the Black Hills. At one time, it was the largest town of its type in Custer County. Find out more here.
